That’s why we wanted to compile a small list of the most spectacular monasteries in Burgos. A journey through the city and much of the province in search of those monasteries that can leave us speechless. From the most valuable from an architectural point of view to the most romantic. Some urban, others surrounded by nature. There’s something for everyone!
Summarizing the most beautiful monasteries in Burgos is not an easy task. We had to choose among dozens of them. And we must not forget the historical importance of this province, cradle of royal and ecclesiastical power during the Middle Ages. Thanks to this, we have an enviable artistic heritage.

Las Huelgas Monastery

This is one of the essential monuments to see in Burgos and for good reason. The Monastery of Santa María la Real de las Huelgas is a true beauty inside and out. It is very striking to come across this historical gem on the outskirts of the city. But even more so, the treasures it holds inside. Especially the impressive Royal Tombs carved in stone with all kinds of details and filigrees. Here lie historical figures such as Alfonso VIII, Sancho de Castilla, Fernando de la Cerda, or Leonor de Castilla, among many others. We are facing a true pantheon of kings.
Another key point that makes this Cistercian nuns’ monastery so special is the Museum of Rich Medieval Fabrics. The guided tour also visits other beautiful corners such as the San Fernando Cloister, the Small Cloisters, and the Chapter House.
San Pedro de Cardeña Monastery

It goes somewhat unnoticed among tourists, but it is an unmissable gem located very close to Burgos. Just a 15-minute drive and we will have arrived at the gates of this spectacular monastery. Its exteriors are impressive. Even more so, the interior where the beautiful Cloister of the Holy Martyrs stands out. But this monastery is much more. Its history is forever linked to the illustrious Burgos warrior Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar. The Cid Campeador, according to the verses of the Cantar del Mío Cid, left the care of his wife and daughters to the Abbot before going into exile.
A historical connection that has endured through the centuries. It is no wonder that his mortal remains and those of Doña Jimena rested within the walls of the monastery until they were looted by Napoleon’s troops. In 1921 they were transferred to the Burgos Cathedral, but we can still admire what was the wonderful Pantheon of the Cid Campeador. Additionally, we are at a key point on the Route of the Cid through the lands of Burgos.
Santo Domingo de Silos Monastery

Who hasn’t heard of this Burgos monastery at some point? It passed into posterity years ago thanks to the harmonious voices of its inhabitants. The monks of Santo Domingo de Silos rose to stardom in the 90s after reaching the top of the charts with their Gregorian chants albums. Today, the memory of those years remains, and the possibility of hearing a Gregorian chant mass live.
Obviously, this Benedictine abbey located in the Arlanza Region is much more than sung masses and gold records. We are facing one of the most important Romanesque legacies in the province and the entire country. Traveling to Burgos without visiting the spectacular Romanesque cloister of Silos should be a sin. Observing every detail of the capitals, being surprised by the incredible stories they hold, and simply feeling the peace that this place transmits is something unique.
